Louis was tragically killed 2 years after being discharged from the army. An application for his tombstone indicates he was a member of the 264th, 66 Division, Company I. We have written for his military records, but understand 85% of the records from this period were destroyed in the 1973 fire. We know he was stationed in Panama until January 1944, but have no information on where he went after that. We have a suspicion he may have been part of the troops who embarked on Christmas Eve 1944 for Cherbourg. This was the night the Leopoldville was torpedoed, sinking in the English Channel, resulting in the loss of over 700 men. We would appreciate any suggestions on how to find out more information.

There will be a memorial and headstone erected for he and my mother late summer this year at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St Louis.

He was a college administrator in Cape Girardeau, MO on his retirement.

It contains short biography's of the men in his platoon , short stories from the men written about their travels , daily observations and a history of the platoon from the time they landed in France till the end of the war . It appears to have been put together after the war ended , but before they shipped back to the states . If any former members of the I&R platoon , or a family member , would like a copy , I would be more than happy to email them one .

For a college level history class, I began a project about two local heroes, John Boyce Dancy and Clifton P Moncrief, from Tate County, MS, my home. These men died during the Leopold disaster and were part of the 66th division, 262nd infantry. Naturally, I am very interested to learn if any one has additional information about these two particular men and other men from the 66th. My higher purpose is an appeal to you all, the adults, to help us tell this story to our generation, your country's children. My own grandfather served in the Battle of the Bulge, earning a Silver Star, but died long before I was born. I need to borrow another grandfather or uncle. To those who still have details and family photos about this division or the men who served, please email to me at the address below. You see, what started as a project has now morphed into a grant in conjunction with National Archives and others. We (my fellow students) were also able to appeal to our school administration for an elective on WWII history next year. I am happy to report 1/3 of our class (41) signed up for the elective. See there, your spirit and patriotism does live on. In fact, it led me to apply to West Point. Because our's is a state school, represented by students from every county, the project will now encompass every Mississippian who died during WWII. We plan to expand to the Arkansas, Alabama and Louisiana, Schools for Math and Science to grow the base of information available. Hopefully, we will "march on" from there. Thank you for your help, your service and for coming home. Any correspondence will be most warmly received.
