After the German surrender on the Quiberon Peninsula, an atrocity at Fort Penthièvre was uncovered. In a walled tunnel, blocked with stones and sealed with cement, were found the remains of some 60 civilians murdered by the German garrison in reprisal shootings. Although most of the victims apparently had been shot, from inscriptions found on the walls of the tunnel it is believed that some were buried here alive. (Photo taken on May 16, 1945. My father was not present at the time). |
