Last year I opened my first-ever, all-digital holiday e-newsletter on somewhat of an
apologetic note, expressing my hope that traditionalists would not be offended. This year,
however, I write to you without remorse. The Internet has fed, clothed, and sheltered me for
a year and a half now, so I think it only fitting and proper that I pay homage to my provider
and use this medium to convey my holiday well-wishes.
2000 began in spectacular fashion: on New Year's Eve my parents, brother Andrew, and I
braved the cold and the crowds in Washington, DC, and -- standing between the Lincoln Memorial and
the Washington Monument -- enjoyed a star-studded concert and dazzling pyrotechnic display.

Soon after, though, January would be marred by two events.
